With Mt. Kinugasayama for scenery, Kinkakuji Temple is the epitome of the sparkling gold Kitayama culture. In 1397 a villa was built by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, 3rd generation of the Ashikaga Shogunate. The 3-storied golden villa faces Kyokochi (a mirror pond), showing its glittering gold leaf pasted form. The garden is a noted strolling-type garden. Kinkakuji Temple is registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site. |

Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple |

The base of Mt. Ogurayama is called Adashino (Field of Sorrow), and was the burial ground of the dead. The temple was begun when the priest Kukai (Great Priest Kobo) constructed it in order to intern the unclaimed deceased. Collecting the stone Buddhas and tombstones that were scattered around Adashino, there are approximately 8,000 pieces. |

Floating down the Hozugawa River from Hozuhashi Bridge in Kameoka to Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama in a small boat - It's only 16km, but the view of the ravine is amazing. Winding through the mountains covered in beautiful Kitayama cedar, you can admire cherry blossoms in spring and red autumn leaves. Depending upon the weather and water levels, there may be cancellations so it is important to check on the day. The Torocco Railway is the former main line of Japan Railways Sanin Line. It takes about 25 minutes from Sagano Station to Arashiyama Station and passes through Hozukyo Station on its way to Kameoka Station. Saihoji is often referred to as the Kokedera or Moss Temple due to its very famous and very beautiful moss garden. Originally founded in 731, the moss gardens only evolved much later yet remain the focal point of this temple today. Other forms of garden occupying the grounds include a dry rock garden and a landscaped garden with a pond - ideal for taking a stroll around.
